Hacking MSN Search

I posted this quick tutorial on tech-recipes regarding skinning and modding the new MSN Desktop Search. Although I haven't gotten any comments on it, this was one of my most favorite little hacks in quite a while.

Without a doubt, it personalizes my desktop...

Plus, no more microscopic butterfly advertising MSN in my taskbar.

The Wonders of GMail Invites

Techrx has a nice article explaining how google's system of invites is genius on multiple levels. I have been shocked by all the invite swaps and begging for invites. It's great to see something like this bring a little excitement to the net for a while.

What is equally sad is the way people are using invites to collect spam! They post on a forum saying "hey, email me for an invite" and tons of people email them begging. Of course, this is just a way for a spammer to absorb active email addresses. They beg for a free email account, and just get a bunch of spam in return. Sad.

Tech-recipes was such a good idea that we decided to open life-recipes as well. Money, health, social stuff -- we are broadly covering it all.

Life-recipes has not yet seen a big jump in traffic so I am still keeping my fingers crossed. The information that is on the site is great information IMHO... however, there is a lot of this type of general information out there so google isn't driving a lot of traffic our way yet.

The site does not have the mass of information as our other sites yet... so that's probably another reason that it is starting out slow.

I think I can... I think I can...

Life-Recipes -- What Your Mother Should Have Taught You

A cookbook for computer stuff? Yeah, I thought it was pretty crazy when Q first suggested it. Q knows computers like I know medicine... so we tried it... and it is working well.

Now we are getting to the point where we have members who frequently submit recipes and help people who post questions in the forums. We are handing out T-shirts and such as thanks... but it is amazing that our site is starting to bubble up like this.

With Q's huge knowledge base, I figure we'll become pretty popular on the linux/solaris side pretty quickly. I try to keep us in the market with windows stuff, but there is already so much of that information already out there. We even do a little AIM and google hints and tweaks as well.

If you want a friendly little computer-help site, then give tech-recipes.com a shot.
